Civic Affairs

The Nord Family Foundation's support for programs that meet basic human needs is guided by a desire to advance the public understanding of issues and practices that affect community growth and stability. Over the years, the Foundation has provided core support to the South Lorain Community Development Corporation, the Lorain County Urban League, and other nonprofit organizations whose programs increase opportunities for the poor and disadvantaged; and the Foundation has also provided special purpose grants to the government sector for projects that rebuild neighborhoods.

Where services were lacking, the Foundation has responded by initiating programs that bridge the gap between local needs and available resources. One such example is the Women's Development Center, which was created by the Foundation in 1992 to empower low-income and welfare-dependant women by helping them to develop and establish their own small businesses. To promote civic engagement and community service, the Foundation created the Lorain County Public Services Internship Program and the Grassroots Leadership Development Program; and in 1989 (in collaboration with the Stocker and George Gund foundations), The Nord Family Foundation initiated the Public Service Institute at Lorain County Community College to enhance the effectiveness of Lorain County's nonprofit and government sectors by means of educational workshops, customized training sessions, and discussion group facilitation.
